How to recover from defeats as an artist

Since Corona at the latest, we all know the situation. The break, the fall, the defeat, the new beginning. Starting over as an artist after one or more low periods can be one of the most difficult tasks any creative has to face. It takes a lot of courage and determination to dust off the dirt of the floor, pick yourself up, collect yourself and start all over again. But it’s not impossible – with willpower and focus on your own resilience, you can put yourself back on the path to success.

Here are some tips to help you get back on your feet

1. Review your goals

One of the most important things to do before starting over is to take a step back and reevaluate your goals. What do you want to achieve with your art form? What has already been implemented and what still needs to be done?

Ebenso gilt es, den vorangegangenen Schritt vor dem Fall einzuschätzen. What had happened? How did it come to that? All these questions help to find the best path and then decide whether these paths can be walked on again without any problems or whether this time a completely different one might be called for.

2. Give yourself a break

Don’t force yourself to jump right back into the action.

With every setback, no matter how small, it is a good idea to take some time off and thus give yourself a chance to rest and recharge your batteries. This will help you clear your head and gain a healthy perspective on the situation.

3. Look for the right support

Don’t hesitate to ask for help from other creatives or artists in your network who have had similar experiences to yours. They can give you valuable advice on how they dealt with and overcame their own obstacles. These conversations can be very helpful and can support you in rebuilding your confidence and starting over.

4. Make a plan

A well-set plan can be incredibly helpful when you need to start from scratch. You can follow the plan, this will force you and motivate you towards your goals. Create an achievable timeline for yourself that is broken down into manageable sub-goals. Keep your eye on your personal, as well as financial resources available to you.

5. Celebrate small victories

As you prepare to resume your journey, don’t forget to celebrate the small steps and completed preparations as well. Achieving even the smallest goals is an important step that will help you stay motivated and on track for the bigger picture.

Starting over as an artist can be a challenging journey, but it doesn’t have to be impossible. If you take the time to conscientiously set your goals and plan for the future, seek support in your network and celebrate small successes along the way, so you can get back on track with renewed confidence and enthusiasm.

Give a face to your art.
